Suburbia

I first found out about Warren Kirk through thimble's blog post and have since been following him via his flickr account. He captures these perfectly imperfect snapshots that are filled with charm and nostalgia and retell so many aspects which I love about Australia and our suburbs.

Today's post is 100% dedicated to Warren as I adventured around Golden beach, a sleepy suburb in Caloundra filled with many a tale. I also got to start on my 100 strangers project with the amazing Naomi! When I shoot weddings I have to approach strangers frequently for their photos, it's nerve wracking but I think I'm getting slowly better - this project will hopefully dwindle that fear down even further.

When I approached Naomi she was worried about not looking good enough for the camera so she suggested I take the photo as she looked into her mailbox :) I then asked if I could take a photo of her house, after getting approval I ran across the street and before I was over, Naomi yelled back to me "would you like me standing in front?"

She said I made her day but honestly she made mine :)

    1. It's nice to be reminded of those plans, they are always at the back of my mind too though when I see people I want to photograph I usually convince myself I'm not in a photographic mood - so hopefully the 100 strangers project will force me out of that mindset!

  3. ooooooh I ADORE all these photos! I miss our cute daggy houses back in Australia :-( I especially love the photo of Naomi with her beautiful house. I too get really scared about taking photos of people and even houses sometimes- I feel like such a creep haha. p.s. thanks for the mention :-)

    1. Australia is awesome - sometimes it takes other creative peeps to remind me of it though, so thanks for sharing Warren! :) :) Hope America is treating you nicely!

  4. Great photos as usual. I can't be certain, but I think in the top one I spot Windward Passage (the tall building). We stay there at least three times a year. It's just far away enough from Brisbane to feel like a true holiday. The modern house in the last photo took me by surprise!

    1. We used to holiday a bit at Caloundra, before moving to the Sunshine Coast doing that trip was awesome. Actually it still is awesome but maybe it just has less of a holiday vibe now. I definitely have many fun holiday memories though!

  7. Ohmy Fee!! What an amazing project and interesting pictures! Hats off :) You come up with the best ideas & inspiration. Taking pictures of houses in the US is something that fascinates me. Australian suburbs seem so so interesting as well. Love that you are starting the 100 strangers project with Naomi she looks the most charming lady! Can't wait to see more about this project (love already!)

  16. it's high time i visited your site (we both follow many of the same blogs and have become familiar with your comments)! your photography is wonderful and i've enjoyed reading your posts, but this one in particular struck me: the 100 strangers is an awesome project. i'm not much of a photographer but i'd like to develop those skills and making people comfortable in front of the camera is one of them. i am so shy to ask to take a person's photo (let alone a stranger!) i don't know how you do it as a wedding photographer, but i love how the project challenges that. waht a cool opportunity to meet new people, hear their stories, and share them through your pictures! i think you're off to a great start with this one of naomi. ;)

    1. Aw hey Lucinda, nice to meet you :) I think it's really challenging to approach people, I'm not sure exactly why...fear of rejection perhaps? But then experience has taught me most people really don't mind having their photo taken if you just ask nicely :) I'm off to go check out your blog!
