Thrifty Sunday /10

It's been a while since I did a Thrifty Sunday! I guess I've been busy of late and not visiting the op shops as much or maybe getting more selective with what I do pick up. One thing I'll never get sick of are cute cat ornaments to add to my collection! (still a bit fussy though!)

First up these rad Siamese salt and pepper shakers from Toowoomba. Ben told me an interesting fact passed down from his Mum, that salt and pepper shakers were super popular in the yesteryear due to being classed as a homewares rather than a decorative item and therefore avoiding some type of tax loop-hole thingy. I'm also really bad at retelling stories so maybe someone else can pipe in here with some solid facts!

My swizzle stick collection grows!

Couldn't resist this cutie!

Some vintage Christmas wrappings from a tip-shop of all places!

How cute is this little Avon perfume bottle - high fives all round for some kick arse packaging Avon!

My mum actually spotted this guy for me - an embroidered piece of cloth wedged between two glass panes with one side silver and the other gold

And lucky last (pun intended!) a happy maneki!!

Thrifty Sunday Cats

My thrift hunting has uncovered a few awesome cat related things of late :)

First up this Siamese cat scarf. I saw this amazing bedspread made up on thrift store scarfs once that I'd love to try one day making :)

Not completely sure I could part with this cat scarf for that project though!

Another cute cat to add to my cat ornament collection
(my cat collection is still way too small for my liking but I am super picky!)

I also got this awesome mini Ghibli planter from a church fete, down the street.
Unfortunately the black cat, Jiji was missing his right side whiskers but for 50cents I'm not complaining too much.

Any thoughts on how I can diy him so new whiskers? I was thinking of finding some super thin black wire and super-gluing them on. The original whiskers were a black rubber material but I thought the wire, if I could track it down, might be easier?!?

I'm still find it funny I found him at a church fete, I made up a little story about how one of the church goers had a Japanese exchange student stay with them and they gave them this gift (it's small - can fit in luggage) and the church people just had no idea about it :p the character is from a Studio Ghibli movie called Kikki's Delivery Service which is a really sweet animated film if you ever get the chance to watch it :)

It had instructions on the back (in Japanese) so I just did a quick google search to help me out. It came with this little round disk and seeds (lemon balm) that you place inside the the teacup and then water until the round disk soaks up and expands. So far there hasn't been much action on the growing front but I'm still hopeful :) If those seeds don't work out I'm going to plant a cute little flower inside!

This Marie from The Aristocats needlework was another happy find. Sometimes Op Shops mark these at really high prices but this one was a nice $2 :)

And lucky last the random teddy bear/cat vest :p

In all it's handmade glory - the ribbons were actually super long which makes me think it wasn't designed for a teddy bear. I ended up cutting them to fit gremlin and adding some sticky Velcro for the closures :) I also liked that they used a nice soft felt for the underside! (with a cat in mind??)

I guess we'll never know!
