Garden 3

Time for a photo update on our garden!

wisteria in bloom
Our wisteria vine has lost all its leaves and is now in its pretty flowering stage! Also, that flame tree (in the middle) is going great guns - the little lychee tree beside is definitely trying to keep up :P

wisteria flower
Wisteria close up

zoysia
We decided to buy a bunch of zoysia's to plant in our backyard eating area.  The soil isn't great so we mulched and fertilised in hopes that we'll end up with a carpet of cute fluffy grass one day!

jungle garden section
Our backyard jungle section doing well :)

orchids
My Grandma's rescued orchids are back in flower!

garden progress shots
Running down the side of our house and our rescued figs (from the dump!!) looking healthy - I repainted their pots to crisp them up!

pine
The pine that Ben's mum gifted us is a prolific grower out in the front garden, especially in comparison to the poor little frangipani cutting beside, barely holding on :(

fern tree
Another shot of our jungle section.  We bought another tree fern which is planted in the back corner. They are going to be such stars when they get more height!

rainbow in the garden
I had to include this sweet rainbow shot.  Beneath that tree is my miscarriage garden with some special plants :)

bird of paradise
Our bird of paradise plant that we're always chopping back (too close to the house!).  We might eventually need to hire a digger and move it.  Despite its placement I absolutely love it!

battling backyard bamboo
The war on bamboo, we're nearly there! We've completed the house side section and now onto the last corner (big corner!).  Once the bamboo is cleared we can start thinking about our deck, which is going to start at the front of our house and run down the side.  I'm also going to have an art studio - eep, so lucky!!!

native
We're slowly planting natives in the bank that runs along the side of the house.  It's got the most horrid dry-packed soil and also completely overrun with weeds - work in progress/labour of love!

qld garden
Another shot of the side of the house.

nasturtium
Nasturtiums and the inspiration behind my last post!

tip pruning
I thought I'd killed this plant by going crazy with the pruning (it had some sort of disease) but it has sprung back to life!

weeping teatree
My pride and joy, my weeping tea tree! It's now officially taller than I am :)

garden in qld
The netted-up herb/veggie planter box successfully deterring about 90% of the bugs!

purple wisteria
Pretty wisteria!

front bedroom garden
Around the side, from the bird of paradise, where we've started a garden bed, slow growers! Hopefully not too close to the house, although we did have Ben's mum make sure the placement was a-okay!

garden tour
We dug out the ochna near the mail box and replaced it.  It was a really nice plant (did a great job at screening!) but unfortunately, it lands on the weed list and we're trying to be good kids and remove all the invasive species!

purple bougainvillea
Our bougainvillea going great guns!

tree fern
Such a pretty tree fern! and the hot rio night heliconias (behind) are getting some good height on too!

wisteria bloom photo
Sick of wisteria yet? It only blooms once a year - I need to indulge :P

small garden bed
One of the sections I'm most proud of is the garden bed as you enter our house.  It's so sweet!

grevillea
Wisteria and Grevillea.

robyn gordon grevillea
This particular grevillea is called, Robyn Gordon
side view of garden
Unfortunately, that tall tree on the right is an African tulip and also on the weed list - it'll need to go :(

phyllanthus waterfall plant
We got this phyllanthus (waterfall plant) free via fb marketplace.  It was a crazy pain to dig out and transplant (ben and I got bitten by lots of ants in the process!) but it's doing so well, it totally seems worth the pain now. You can also see, on the very left, a section of an allamanda vine.  Allamanda's are unfortunately also on the weed list, so it too needs to go.

backyard view
Peachy cat! you can see the worn-down grass from all our trodding!

orange nasturtium
I remember sucking out the nectar from the stem of nasturtiums as a kid and being in awe that you could eat flowers! How cool is nature!

backyard garden
A final view of our backyard.

I'm so in love with our garden and I can't wait to do another one of these posts in 6 months to see what has changed and grown :)

Garden 2

Time for another walk around our garden.  During our summer we had a La NiƱa weather system meaning more rain (although not as much as they were predicting).  Neither the less, our garden loved the boost in rain and got so much grow on! We've also been busy weeding and planting and pruning!

square plantWe found two beautiful fig trees at the dump! They were looking a little worse for wear but we knew we could bring them back to life.  Whilst waiting to source proper planters for them, we found them temporary homes.  The fig above was living in a very square box :P

fig trees in planters
We found planters! We just happened to be looking on FB marketplace at just the right time to score these huge beauties for a steal!

front garden
Our front garden getting a grow on

weeping tea tree
This is one of my favourite plants - a weeping tea tree!  I've been waiting patiently for it to reach my height and it finally has 1.7m!

cat on uprooted pony tail palm
Ben and I did a super crazy thing, we went and dug out a free ponytail palm on fb marketplace.  I'm not sure you can tell from this photo but this thing was WAYYY Too heavy and big (3m+).  It was insanely stupid and also my new favourite plant!!

pony tail palm qld
Look how friggen gorgeous that thing is!! We were going to put it in our front garden but Ben's mum chastised us for trying to jam more plants in that section and instead suggested the placement above. Best idea ever, I LURVE it there! Perfection!

battling bamboo
The bamboo battle continues

ripping out bamboo
We have successfully made a big dent with only a quarter left to do before we can start thinking about our deck!

bamboo grows fast
This shot above was taken in dec 2020

bamboo growth
This was taken March 2021! Bamboo grows fast!

front ramp garden
Our front door garden is coming along nicely

bougainvillea on fence
Dec 2020 to...

bougainvillea pink
March 2021! Grow bougainvillea, grow!

small pony tail palm
Ben also got this free, much smaller (fit in his corolla!) ponytail palm.  They do exceptionally well for transplanting/transporting because they have a small root structure (they store their water in their bulbous base).

side front garden
A shot of our side front garden and my passionfruit starting to take over everything.

passionfruit vine
I have four vines in total but this one (down on our back fence) is doing the best, currently brimming with fruit!!

passionfruit flower
The prettiest flower!

take over passionfruit vine
This passionfruit vine is definitely trying to take over the avo tree which was already fighting a battle with an umbrella tree. We shall prune in the future!

passionfruit
Look at all that passionfruit! I planted the vines not long after we first moved in (roughly 1.5 years ago).  The vine took around a year to start flowering and now fruiting 6 months later

croton
A shot of our crotons in the front side yard.  You can see the wisteria trying to take over everything.

jungle section
This shot was taken in dec 2020 and shows our back jungle section.

jungle yard
This shows the other half

fern tree
And this shows our jungle section 3 months later after all that rain.  Look how lush and amazing it's looking!

joop in garden
Joop!

jupiter the dog
Not a big fan of having her picture taken :P

flame tree and lychee
And the final shot (just to the left of the crotons) shows my lychee tree (on the left) and a flame tree gifted to us by Ben's mum on the right.  Both plants are a little hard to spot with all that wisteria spilling in behind!
