Oyster Mushroom Update

white oyster mushrooms

I've already share this on my instagram but I know they have different audiences and plus here I get to post more and bigger photos to show off my amazement!

If you were to scroll back through my blog you would see the last entry before my Dad died was about growing oyster mushrooms.  It was our last project we worked on together and we were deep in exchanging notes and testings right until he died.  When he died, I went and collected the buckets of mushrooms he had at his house that he was growing in his shower (they love humidity :P). In his fridge, were a whole plate of picked mushrooms that I carefully nursed on my lap, on the car ride home.  I wondered if I'd be able to eat them because of the sadness but their tastiness won and it would definitely have been sadder to throw them out.

It's taken six months to grow them again.  They make me incredible sad but they also fill me with so much joy.  When I walked into the garage and saw my first yield, I had to do a double take.  Mushrooms take around 2 weeks to grow, the last two days is where they change from a tiny pin head to a full bloom.  I must have missed a day or two because I got the shock of my life when I saw just how large my first batch was - a gigantic bloom!  I started crying because I was overwhelmed at the success but incredibly sad I couldn't share it with Dad.  I knew I could though, so I just went and sat in a spot in our garden and talked it over with him and everything was okay after that.

 I'm a nerd I measured this bunch along - 500grams!

The best! I'm a total mushroom fan and I'm really glad Dad and I got to share this hobby before he passed.  If you're curious about growing your own, I've written a guide that hangs out here.
