Beach + Seaglass Roundup /10

Beach visits have been few and far between but I still have fun combing for treasures when we make it down  :)

My friend just gave me a bunch of sea glass he collected from his last vacation (when travel was still a thing!) and they are super pretty - a bunch of blues and greens. Just need to get them cleaned up and photographed :)

Beach + Seaglass Roundup /9

It's been a while since I did a seaglass/beach combing round up!

I still find it amazing that sometimes there will be so many goodies down at the beach and other times just a few! I suspect it's tide/weather related but I'm open to other possibilities too!

Seaglass Round Up

Its been a while sharing any photos of seaglass but I've been collecting behind the scenes and now have a bunch of photos to share with you guys. I'm hoping to hit the beaches a bit more come the warmer weather which I'm super super excited about :) :)

Still loving those rare blues and I also love the parts of the bottle tops with their interesting shapes!

Beach + Seaglass Roundup / 5

It's been ages since I've shown off my sea treasures, although mostly seaglass this time there are some cute shells and stones and pieces of pottery too :) I also think there may be a pair of boobies :p I hope writing that doesn't negatively affect any Google searches for burntfeather :p

I hope everyone's week is going well, I've been knocked down by a flu these past few days but fingers crossed I get back on top so next week I can show off some more beach themed entries - woohoo!

Beach + Seaglass Roundup /4

Time to share some more beach treasures with you :) I think I whinged before about the vanishing amounts of seaglass in my area over the last 6 months or so, well I'm glad to report that period seems to have passed and the last few times have been especially awesome.

Although these guys above, aren't beach related I thought I'd throw them into this post; some feathers, gum nuts, rocks and snake skin from around our place.

My collections are growing pretty big now :) I also learned a new word this week, Knolling - I'll leave you with a link to wiki, to fill in the blanks.

Beach + Seaglass Roundup / 3

I've been hoarding seaglass again to get to share with you guys. I've noticed the seaglass in my area has definitely dwindled down in the last 6 months. My previous advice of going after a storm still rings true but overall (on my beach at least) I find myself coming home with less loot. I guess that's half the fun though, if there was a super abundance it would only taint the magical nature of finding those elusive perfect pieces! Silver lining peeps :)

I definitely find myself going for weird shapes and textures. I got way too excited when I found that sea urchin shell in tact and super super excited to find that little bit of bright blue seaglass.

I actually found another piece when my little bro J came to stay. After spotting it, I muttered something like, "man I am so sorry but I have to keep this" and then five seconds getting the guilts and gifting it to him and his collection. Fast forward to a couple of weeks later and I found my own little blue piece, which was a nice surprise and I figured the Universe definitely had my back that time :)

Beach + Seaglass Roundup / 2

I love collecting seaglass, there's a line in this song that goes "do you believe that there's treasures in the ocean" and whenever I hear it I nod along happily. I think the sea is magical and I love that you can go there and find treasures. It's on par with op shopping for me :)

So many pretty colours :)

On the day from the collection above Ben and I found so many "Sea Portals" a name we've given to those spiral white shells! Ben suggested we explore the rock pools which is something I shy away from on my own but I'm super glad we did!

And on my last hunt I found another piece of bright blue! Woohoo it's not super smooth but as I always say, I'm willing to make exceptions for the rare pieces :p

Ben and I are off again tomorrow to the beach and I can't wait to see what treasures await for us!

Seaglass roundup and tips

Every time I go to the beach I take my seaglass finds home and photograph them. I realised I had a lot of photos building up so I'm going to pop them all into this one post and provide some tips for sea glass collecting as well at the end :)

I should mention that I not only get excited about seaglass but also broken pottery and pretty smooth rocks :P

I also get super excited about anything love heart shaped! Brown is the most common seaglass (at least in my area) but I'm still happy to find smooth solid pieces and even happier if they are love heart shaped!

This was a fun day - Ben found some super gems for my collection!

A huge sand dollar.  Well on further googling I'm not sure it is a sand dollar.  Ben said he vaguely remembers from childhood it being created by a sea creature as a door for their home - how cute is that! Does anyone know anymore about these? I've found a few smaller ones but this is my first big one that intact :)

*I chated with Ben and we have officially renamed them sea portals :)

Whilst out trekking the rock pools (I'd never thought to look in) Ben also found me my first ever sea marble! I know it's just a marble but being sea-i-fied makes it super rare in my eyes :)

And an aerial view of the loot :)

This day was super amazing too because I found a piece of bright blue glass! I have a few in my collection that my friend Karla found in Thailand but this was my very own find. It isn't the most smooth piece I own but I'll happily overlook that due to it's blue-ness!!

A feather, some pottery and a love heart rock :)

And a small find the other day.

I'm still on the look out for a yellow, black and red piece of seaglass and the top of the bottle (how cool would a seaglass ring be!)

And now for my seaglass finding tips!
1) not all beaches have seaglass - look for areas where shells and shell grit wash up, good chances you'll spot some brown glass. Once you get the hang out of spotting glass, it's really easy and reminds me of one of my favourite things to do as a kid - puzzles!
2) some pieces look really pretty at the beach being all slick and wet but when you bring them home and they dry up they start developing a frosting and start looking less pretty. I used to throw out many pieces because of this until I googled a solution - baby oil! Seriously one drop on a piece of cloth and you can restore any piece :) any oil is okay too!
3) my cleaning method is really easy, rinse, dry and then a smudge of baby oil for those that need it
4) I find I come home with more loot after a big storm the night before. I also find that if I think about a colour of glass I start seeing that colour more - spooky! Also low expectations are good :)
5) check the tides of your beaches, low tide is the best - you don't want to trek down to your beach only to discover there is no beach to look on :p
6) also and maybe contradictory to the above, think about the time and shadows. I still haven't decided if bright midday sun helps me locate seaglass more easily or if just before sunset when the light is less harsh is easier.
7) if I'm travelling to a new area (for a holiday or such) I'll do a quick google/flickr search to see if seaglass pops up.  Sometimes people don't like to share their secret seaglass locations but you can usually get a good idea if there is any in a certain area or not.
8) not 100% sure on this tip but I have a feeling the more isolated and pristine the beach is the less likely you'll find seaglass.  Why? Well my thinking is that there isn't as many people dumping rubbish (bottles etc.) so less chance for seaglass to form

9) try and not be discouraged.  From my experiences the majority of beaches I've travelled too - don't have seaglass - you just have to stumble upon that magic spot!

Maybe you have some tips yourself? Let me know!
HAPPY hunting!!!

p.s Ben and I are off camping in Byron - so no doubt this blog is going to go a little bit quiet!

Mooloolaba Beach

Maybe it's a good thing we moved further away from the beach because it's too easy to take photo of the same spot we always go to - oops! Prepare yourself for an onslaught of Gremlin photos!

My beach treasure finds for the day! I've started keeping my eyes peeled for rocks with holes (don't laugh!)

I was saying the other day how since Ben left I've avoided bathing Gremlin well I just want to report that I've now successfully bathed him by myself :) For others needing encouragement these are my tips especially if you're doing it alone

1) Lots of treats beforehand! I like to butter him up with ham :)
2) Have everything ready - towel, shampoo (cap opened) pouring water
3) Don't put too much water in and use a big space - I'm thinking it helps for them not to feel trapped. I filled up the bath just so it covered his legs but doesn't reach his belly
4) Stay calm - what's the worse that could happen? Bloody arms? A traumatised cat? A soapy cat running around the house?
5) Make it a quick process. I placed him in the tub holding him by the scruff, poured water all over, put on the shampoo and rinsed him off and I also made sure to have the heater going in our room for afterwards.

Actually I lie slightly, don't make the process too quick because you'll have to carry him back upstairs, back into the tub and rinse off that huge soapy patch that you missed *face palm*

I know bathing cats is probably a little stupid (or a lot) but I like to get him all clean before we do his flea/tick treatment. I don't know if any of you have had experience but the spray on tick stuff is almost a a bad as the bath experience - actually it's much worse!
