Day 7 - Chillagoe Smelters

So the famous Chillagoe Smelters, which closed in 1943 but in it's time treated...1.25 million tonnes of ore, 60 000 of copper, 50 000 of lead, 181 of silver and 5 tonnes of gold. Although all the building and machinery were auctioned and removed, the debris left makes for cool photos!

Wasn't the sunrise I was expecting but still pretty shots I think :)

Day 7 - Donna Cave

So we were greeted at the entrance to Donna Cave by Luke, the Park Ranger.  Having already been exposed to a few tour guide styles I prejudged Luke and assumed the tour was going to be technical and boring. Turns out Luke is a champ and although he bought out a few of the textbook tour guides jokes I laughed at all of them! He had a good info/humour/quiet ratio!

As you walk down into the cave, Luke explained why it's called Donna cave...any guesses by the photo below?

He also told us that there are three animals that live in limestone caves, cockroaches which are eaten by huntsmen spiders which are eaten by bats which are eaten by pythons. Great all my most feared! lol
We ended up only seeing a few bats and they were actually ridiculously cute :)

So I'll let the pictures do the talking now..

The famous 'fairy grotto' apparently the most photographed section of any of the caves in Chillagoe!

Let there be light!

No huntsmen spider sightings, but a cute web on the way out!

Day 7 - North Queensland - Chillagoe

Spot the Wallaby!

After seeing that awesome sunset over the smelters I had the rad idea to wake up ridiculously early and go photograph the smelters at sunrise! Sunrise was definitely not as dramatic as sunset :P Oh well, I'll share those photos in a seperate post because chillagoe is pretty image heavy! There was a lot happening for a sleepy sleepy town! After my photo expedition I went back, grabbed Ben from his delicious slumber and we checked out of our hotel motel.  The dude I think was a bit taken a back and just told us to leave it all open!
We then set off to Chillagoe's information centre to book our tickets to go cave exploring! I mentioned Chillagoe is famous for it's dinosaur bones though it's probably more famous for it's limestone caves! We ended up in the information centre engaged in conversation with a delightful old man, who obviously loved his town. He gave us several ideas to fill the day plus our tickets for Donna Cave, which promised a 'fairy grotto'!

One of the attractions we were told to check out was, Balancing Rock, so we went there before our tour of Donna Cave started.

The landscape of Chillagoe is amazing and not what I was expecting.
I was thinking inland = dryness but it was actually lush and rad!

eep! the obligatory shot of Balancing Rock!

Donna Cave was amazing but again I have that nasty habit of taking too many photos for one blog entry, so i'll skip to our exploring we did afterwards. Chillagoe has six caves, three are by ticket/guide only and three are self guided. We decided to check out Pompeii which is a self guided one. Although much smaller than Donna cave it was definitely worth checking out!

We definitely fell in love with caves!!
After our cave exploring we checked out the local aboriginal paintings

Minimal but cool none the less

Too many things to do...we then made our way to the cemetery.   When the lovely old man from the info centre mentioned it as something we should check out, I loved him even more as I love cemeteries!

It was super hot so we then popped into the local swimming hole we had been directed too. I appreciate North qld for it's deserted swimming holes!

We then went to check out the smelters, Chillagoe other claim to fame, even though I had already been there, Ben wanted to check them out as well :)
(but I'll save that overload of images for another blog post)

Let's just say it turned into an epic day, we said goodbye to Chillagoe and started the long drive back to Mission Beach making sure to stop in at some cool places on our way back...stay tuned!

Always fascinated by the different signs up here!

Frog Rock ART!

Day 6 -Jungle Surfing and Chillagoe

Yup all geared up and ready for some jungle surfing action! I was actually really nervous and half not wanting to go but I gulped back the fear and went along with Ben's plan to Jungle Surf. What is jungle surfing, it's five platforms set up amongst the trees, offering a different perspective to the rainforest, you harness up and then travel on wire from one platform to the next all with helpful guides ranging from the nerd guide to the cool English dude guide!

I'm a wuss and super afraid of heights but it was completely non scary even when they asked up to do this..

Weee, I doubted my ability to twist myself upside down, but definitely do-able!

Aww! The only photo we have together of the trip I think :P
So that was jungle surfing we hoped in the car, saw the cassowary family, did I mentioned we saw a cassowary family :P lol and headed out of the Daintree

I made sure to snap a pic of the Big Croc Head just before the mossman river crossing and then it was on the way to Chillagoe...the landscape dramatically started changing!

We instantly liked Chillagoe when we noticed a giant dinosaur as we drove in!
Chillagoe's claim to fame! (well one of them)

Mr Lasmasaur!

The night we checked into our "hotel motel" watched the sun set over the smelters and ate some bad pub food!
