Fraser Island - Film Photos

So yesterday I showed you a roll of Lomo 100 colour I took on Fraser Island last and today I'm showing you a few extra photos from that roll that I converted digitally to black and white :)

And I'm still on track with my monthly Film Camera series, just a word of warning I think this month I've already taken far too many photos of my cats! :P

Canon 1000f - Lomography 100 /02

I'm back with some more film that's not part of my monthly series but leftover from last year. I've shot a roll of Lomo 100 in my canon film camera (1000f) before with happy results you can see here and I was just as happy this time round :)

These shots are from our last Fraser Island trip which you can read more about over here too.

Tomorrow I'm going to throw up a few extra photos from the roll that I thought warranted being converted to black and white :)

Canon 1000f - Kodak Ektar 100 film

Almost finished my film reviews and today it's another no brainer combo, my Canon 1000f using Ektar film. 

You might notice these recent photos below!

Fail Reasons

The fail reasons were not having a fast enough shutter for pet photography - can't believe I keep forgetting that :p I also had a couple of shots overexposed and a couple underexposed

Things to Remember

Using an aperture of 3 or more for portraits really helps with focus issues (thanks Dani again!).
Using AV on this camera at night with the built in flash left some happy accidents of light trails :)

The flash was able to exposure our faces but the shutter which stayed open for what felt like a minute let in all those pretty light streaks :) Also remembering to overexpose by two stops seems to be the winning formula!

I feel like I've learned a lot over the last year or so and am super excited to keep learning and experimenting :)

Film Christmas

Before it's officially too late to stop posting Christmas photos, here are some shots from a roll of film I recently got developed. I used my Canon 1000f with Ektar film (will review soon!)

You may notice, from the above picture, I like to clash at Christmas! Thanks Dani for the 'upping the aperture' tip to get my film shots in focus, seems to be working, hurrah!

Ben and I went to my family for Christmas lunch, Ben commented it was a very Australian Christmas spread; cold ham, fresh prawns, chicken, salads and of course Bon bons!

At night we headed to my friend's shane place, they have a wood fire oven, so we all made our own pizza and had a pizza-off, my pizza didn't do so great because the pumpkin was slightly undercooked...oops!

And then Ben and I ended the night by getting silly but we're always silly, so that's not so odd :p Ben went back to work the other day, so it's back to being boyfriend-less for another six weeks, nooooo! I've learnt to adjust to him being away (sorta) but it's still sucks, I miss my buddy :(

Canon 1000f - lomography 800 film

The last time I used the lomography 800 film it was largely indoors, so it was interesting to test out the film purely outdoors. I finished the roll at the wedding and was overall happy with the results.

Fail Reasons: cats that move too fast

Things to remember: cats are hard to photograph :p
In all seriousness though I enjoyed how the Lomo 800 performed more with the inside shots than the outside ones. Having been using Ektar 100 film since I first got into film photography, I would say (and since it's designed for landscapes) it definitely performs so much better for outdoor scenes and I would definitely go for a film like that instead of 800 Lomo. 

To be honest who would shoot 800 lomography outside on a sunny day for landscape shots, no one except me that's who!  In my defense the 800 was in my camera and I had to use it up before I could change rolls. I was honestly expecting (and had packed) to shoot a gazillion rolls of film at the wedding but ended up coming home with just three!  One other thing I can laugh at myself for I tried to used the 800 film in my camera up the day before the wedding knowing that I didn't want to start the day which such high speed film.  I actually thought it was nearly finished too but the 1000F camera, winds on the film backwards and thus the counter clock which I thought was nearly finished had only just begun - classic fee! lol lol

Canon 1000f - Portra 400

So I used a roll of Portra 400 using my Canon 1000f at the wedding and was overall pleased with the results, like the previous time I used portra it definitely delivered reliable shots :)

Fails Reasons: I did something I haven't done in a very long time, I didn't set my shutter fast enough for a few shots so they turned out blurry! I'm still shaking my head that I did that :p Also all the shots I took at night at the reception were horrid! The reception area had, let's just say, interesting lighting and only my b&w shots could save the day :)

Things to remember: Check your shutter speed that it's not lower than your lens, aka if you are using a 50mm lens don't have the shutter slower than 1/50th of a second or a 35mm don't go below 35! Rookie error! Also portra is reliable so if your shooting in bad lighting portra is going to capture that bad light for you :p And finally always always overexposure colour film!

Canon 1000f - Fuji Superia 200 - Expired Film

Okay it's round two for the Fuji Superia 200 expired film, paired with the canon 1000F and this time my commentary isn't much better.

13 keeps 12 fails (24 exposure roll, one freebie!)

Fail Reasons: I found the blacks too contrasty - if that makes any sense. A lot of my images were underexposed and then some were overexposed - to be fair though that's really my fault not the film!

Things to remember: Not to buy this film again :p I'd still like to try some expired film with some crazy colour casts but I guess that's one the joys of film - you'll never know what you'll get until right at the end!  To me I could just see that the images were of lesser quality than other films I've tried.  I love that everyone's tastes are different though and that the low quality that fuji superior has might in fact be it's selling point to others :)

Canon 1000F - Lomography 100

Okay I picked up another film camera this time for $10 which is funny because although reasonable was still more expensive than my three dollar camera and yet not as good quality. When I say not good quality I just mean it has some limitations, it has a slower shutter, resulting in the inability to use my lenses wide open in the sun (they let in too much light which the shutter can't counteract with speed). It definitely doesn't have the bells and whistles of the EOS 3 but in some ways I like it better because it's so simple! It is also capable of double exposures which is fun!  

You can pick up the 1000F from eBay for really cheap, under 50 bucks - just saying! You do have to watch though with second hand cameras as the shutter only has so many clicks until it dies!

27 Keeps 11 Fails

Fails Reasons: The cool things about the 1000F is it has a built in flash which to some is probably hideous but I actually like that cheesy Terry Richardson-esq bad flash style :p I tested the flash out with a few self portraits (using the self timer) at night and they would of been fine except for the fact that I was using my 35mm lens with lens hood (making the lens length too long for the flash range, aka the lens hood left a big black shadow on each image). So next time I'm going to use my 50mm without the hood and see if that works out! The other fail reasons where just ugly double exposures but that wasn't the film or the camera's fault

Things to remember: I got super excited when I got this roll back! I'd finally felt like I had understood the need to overexposed colour film. I had read about not doing double exposures of flowers in full sunlight and about how much to underexposed per double exposure shot but in the end I just thought, more light more light and that seemed to do the trick! I did shoot most of the roll at a very picturesque location so it was hard to mess up but still I liked how the film performed and will (and have!) bought the lomo 100 again :)
