Film Camera a Month - December

The last camera in my Film Camera a Month series! 

For December I used my plastic fantastic holga 135BC

I loaded it up with some Fuji Superia 800 X-TRA. The results were somewhat expected out of a camera with very limited settings and a plastic lens (plus the film was most likely past it's expiry!)  

Some of the shots were taken from our trip down to Port Macquarie after Christmas and others climbing Mt. Beerwah in the glasshouse mountains. I have a few more photos of Port Macquarie to share (once I have a moment to edit them) but for now, enjoy the few shots that were redeemable from the roll with some double and triple exposures thrown in for fun.

Also I'll admit it's a tad melancholic being the last post in the series.  In happier news, I've already loaded my OM1 up with film and still have some film shots waiting to be shared. I definitely intend to keep on taking film this year with the added bonus that now I have a better idea of which camera to use for what situation :)

Holga 135 - Lomo Lady Grey Film

I was almost not going to post these photos because they are super super old but I figure film is always fun to share no matter the date. I shot these guys using lomography's b&w Lady Grey film (400) in my Holga 135bc which I'm going to rock later in the year for my film camera a month series, so stay tuned for more!

Holga 135bc

Time to share some more film photos that have been sitting in my hard drive for FOR-EVER! I'm talking like two Halloweens ago or something crazy! I thought I'd put together all my show photos (ekka + aussie world) where I used my Holga135bc camera - a plastic fantastic beast which takes 35mm film. The colour photos were taken with 800 Lomography film and the black and white, also a Lomography brand - lady grey (400). I did a bunch of things like use flash, long exposures, double + triple exposures, so enjoy the madness!

800 Lomo - Holga 135bc

So far so good on my commitment to a film camera a month - Woohoo! The only hurdle so far is that I have too much film - rolls that I never got developed and never got to share with you guys. So even though I'm going off course here, I still thought it was better to share these rogue rolls than to not! So the plan is to get around blogging my random rolls whilst still doing my film camera a month promise :) :) 

Sound good? I hope so :) 

The first random roll was all the way back from my trip to Japan. I was quite excited to see this roll because it contained one of my favourite things from our trip - fruit bus stops!!! I used my Holga 135bc, which you can read more over here. The Holga 135bc is a super cheap, basic, one-setting camera that I used with a lomography 800 Colour roll of film. 800 ISO turned out to be a perfect speed for that one camera settings giving lots of light and thus probably exposed photos :) 

The Holga 135bc with its plastic lens and very simple design ends up producing very soft photos but I actually think it works really great for those fruit bus stops which were taken in very very bright sunlight (almost too contrasty for my digital!) Lesson learnt - high ISO film and very bright lighting go down a treat with the Holga 135bc!

Holga 135bc - Lomography 400 Film

Okay so we saw how the holga reacts with 100 film how about a slightly faster 400 film! Admittedly my not-so-favourite film speed but since toy cameras are so unpredictable anyway film speeds are the least of my concerns :P

Well I can say I tried to get too experimental here and bitterly failed!

 These above were one of few that made the good cut *gasp*

STATS

12 keeps 24 fails

Fails reasons: I tried to attempt a photo where you take a shot of a scene with you in it, you exit the scene and the same photo gets taken which should leave a cool looking ghost like appearance of yourself. These just didn't work. Either Ben has the most shakey hands ever or you really need to use a tripod when attempting something like that! even a shutter release cable would be great so your avoiding actually touching the camera and causing it to move! Other fail reasons included; taking food photography at night (with the flash) and being too close or not close enough :p cropped heads again, any sort of close up and finally ugly exposures :p

Things to remember: double exposures are hard, practise makes perfect! The camera just doesn't do close ups and the flash doesn't handle distance at night. To be fair the flash I have, probably isn't the most powerful thing (read: cheap) but I still think 1-2 metres would be wise for the future flash projects!

Holga 135bc vs Pink Dress

So I lost my lovely pink dress toy camera whilst up north and replaced it with a Holga 135bc, the BC bit just means it creates vignetting aka dark edges which I thought would be fun :) I own another Holga but it doesn't take normal 35mm film, so getting the 135bc meant it's now easy to buy and develop film, which is nice!

I got my roll back the other day from the Holga and just from that one roll I think the pink dress, toy camera has the egde. The pink dress always produced really cool saturated mages which lacks sometimes in the Holga. The Holga has more features but if I loose the Holga I'll replace it with the pink dress camera again :)

I always think that toy cameras don't really need features, keep it simple stupid! Still, the Holga is fun and I want to try and play with double exposures more, which is when you take a picture and before advancing the film you snap another photo over the top, like the one below...
